Does this excerpt sound ok?

This sounds like something I've read in an already published work by an actual author. But I've seen this somewhere. Don't let your desperation for high praise prompt you to lift somebody else's work and claim it as your own. Maybe you rushed to type it here and got a few typos, but please don't lift other people's work.
