Are the concepts of "Democracy" and "Islam" mutually exclusive?

That depends what you mean. Religion as a system of government -- yes, that's incompatible with democracy, though it has nothing to do with Islam in particular. It would the same with a Christian theocracy. Believing it privately and keeping that sphere separate from politics? No, that's not incompatible.
